About Us

The roots of J. Davis Cattle run deep in the hills of Upstate South Carolina, with family ownership dating back more than a century.

The ranch includes land originally acquired by Mandy Davis's grandfather, James "Jim" Nicholson, who purchased the land with money saved while serving in World War 1. Additional portions of the ranch were purchased by Joel Davis's grandfather, Walter Reid Davis, during the 1920s. In 1944, while serving overseas during World War II, Joe's father, Julian Davis, purchased additional acreage that remains part of the operation today.

Over the generations, both the Davis and Nicholson families carefully stewarded the land, using portions for row-crop farming and portions for beef cattle production. While the type and scale of agriculture have evolved over the years, cattle have always been a part of the farm's history.

Joe and Mandy Davis began expanding their cattle operation in the early 1990s and became full-time cattle producers in 2001. Continuing the family's commitment to agriculture, Joel and Michelle Davis began purchasing cattle and additional acreage in 2023, further expanding the ranch and investing in its future.

Today, J. Davis Cattle remains a family-operated ranch focused on responsible land stewardship, quality cattle, and the preservation of a legacy built by generations before us. The current owner of J. Davis Cattle is Joel Davis, son of Joe Davis, who passed down the reins to the four generations of ownership. Joe Davis remains the current COO of the farm, and Mike Hall serves as the Farm Operations Lead for J. Davis Cattle. Together, they are the driving force behind our day-to-day cattle and land management operations.  Michelle, who grew up on a dairy farm herself, joined the J. Davis Cattle operations team in 2011 and now serves in Accounting. The next generation is shaping the future of J. Davis Cattle. All three of Joel and Michelle Davis's children, Jackson, Ryleigh, and Theo, have spent their entire lives working alongside their family, helping care for the land and cattle. Today, a sixth generation is already becoming part of the ranch's story. Jackson's daughter can often be found riding along with her grandparents, great-grandparents, and even her great-great-grandmother, affectionately known as "Nanny Nick" Harris, as they check cattle and enjoy time together on the farm. These moments reflect the family values, work ethic, and agricultural heritage that continue to be passed from one generation to the next. 

For more than 100 years, this land has supported family, livestock, and agriculture. Our goal is to honor that heritage while building a stronger future for the generations still to come.
